OPACITY

Opacity is a measure of how much light can get through each shade, and it will make a big difference when you use other technology in your smart home.

Opacity is measured in percentages -- one percent lets the least about of light through, ten percent the most. During bright days, sunshades with moderate opacity can allow an appropriate amount of light through without heating up the room or allowing UV rays to damage your furnishings.

And a helpful tip: while many homeowners opt for white sunshade options, thinking they’ll open up the room and create a brighter look, that’s not always the case. Instead, white sunshades can cause a lot of glare in your space. We recommend darker colors. Rather than creating an oppressive environment, they absorb excess light so you can see more inside and out.

RAILROADING

Another common label you’ll see on shading options is “railroadable.” This means the pattern on the fabric can run either up the roll or across the roll. As you can imagine, this affects your style choices significantly.

Railroaded fabric is easier to customize to different sizes and shapes. No matter how unusual your window dimensions, you should get the style you want, as the pattern can go either way.

If the manufacturer can’t railroad the fabric, customizing it becomes a hassle. The manufacturer will have to combine multiple sheets, and that can result in unsightly seams that detract from the overall look of the space.
